He died at the scene after the Landrover Jeep he was driving hit a tree on the Curragh Road near astleroe, shortly after 3 p.m.
Mr McCollum, a farmer in his mid-70's and known to his friends as 'Jimmy', was married with a grown-up family.
The Curragh Road was closed after the crash, but re-opened to traffic in the early hours of this morning.
