A Ballycastle councillor is hitting out at those responsible for burning the beach boardwalk at the weekend.

Cara McShane, who had campaigned for several years to have the boardwalk installed, said:

“This was an act of wanton vandalism. It is not just an attack on one of the best used public assets in the town, it is an attack on every individual in this community.

“The person who struck a match to the boardwalk has stripped away accessibility to the beach for thousands of people. Wheelchair users; children in push prams and those with various mobility issues - loved to use this walkway daily to get near the sea."

The councillor continued: “This simple pleasure has now been denied to them and to their families, through the selfish and narrow minded actions of clowns in this community.

“Instead of continuing with the campaign to have this boardwalk extended much further, the case has been weakened and Council will now have to focus attention on trying to repair the damage to the existing structure.”
