Mayor joins Poppy Appeal launch

Causeway Coast and Glens Mayor Maura Hickey has helped to launch this year’s Poppy Appeal in Coleraine.

Causeway Coast and Glens District Mayor, Alderman Maura Hickey has helped launch this years Poppy Appeal.  She took part in the launch at Colerain's Royal British Legion premises.

After the event Alderman  Hickey said: “It is all too easy to overlook the sacrifice made by servicemen and women across the world. The Remembrance period and the Poppy Appeal puts this back into perspective and provides an opportunity for reflection."

She added that "With this in mind, I would encourage everyone to show their support for the campaign. I would like to thank all those who volunteer their time to the fundraising campaign locally. Their efforts are significant, and I hope they get the support and recognition they deserve.”

This year, events will be held in 12 locations across the Borough on Remembrance Sunday – November 13th.   In Coleraine, the parade is due to leave the Royal British Legion on Beresford Road at 10.30am. This will be followed by a service and wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Diamond. There will be a Church service at Terrace Row Church at 11.30am.

Rathlin Island’s Service of Remembrance takes place on Sunday, November 20th at 11.30am in St Thomas’s Parish Church.
On Armistice Day, Councillors will gather with representatives from the Armed Forces, the Veterans Association and the Cadet Forces for a parade and memorial service in Coleraine.
