Yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Northern Ireland for snow and ice today and Friday.

Frequent sleet, hail and snow showers may lead to some disruption to travel from 8pm tonight until 11am tomorrow.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

People are urged to take care as there may be some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

There will also probably be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

This Met Office has given this forecast:

''Frequent wintry showers arriving from the west during Thursday evening and overnight are likely to lead to a covering of snow for areas above 200 m (mainly around 2-4 cm, possibly as much as 5-10 cm over highest ground where showers are most frequent).

''Falling snow below this level may cause some temporary slushy accumulations which then may freeze and cause dangerous, icy patches where skies remain clear for long enough.

''Winds will be gusty around heavier showers and there is also a small chance of lightning strikes from isolated thunderstorms in the northwest.''
