Northern Ireland's NHS can still lead the way says Professor Bengoa

The man tasked with reforming Northern Ireland's Health service says he's confident that once reformed it can still lead the way.

In 2016 Professor Rafael Bengoa produced a report warning of increasing hospital pressures unless reforms are implemented.

He advocated moving from an acute care system to one which deals with chronic illnesses.

He says the problems being faced at present should not come as a surprise.

We warned in our October 2016 report about the "burning platform" - that the current outdated system will increasingly be unable to cope as pressure challenges intensify. Inevitably, demand will continue to increase sharply as people live longer lives.

At present, too many services are based around buildings rather than being centred on what people and communities need.

Much more care needs to be delivered in primary care settings, close to or in people's homes. That's the essence of transformation. I keep in close contact with Northern Ireland and I know there are some less than positive voices on the prospects for serious health reform.
