Glentoran are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Gary Haveron on Wednesday night.

The 36-year-old had been in charge at the Oval for 17 months.

The east Belfast club is due to announce on Thursday who'll take over for the rest of the season.

Their next game is at home to Cliftonville in the Danske Bank Premiership on Saturday.

The Glens are in sixth place but risk dropping into the bottom half of the table as Ballymena are just two points behind with three games in hand.

It proved a difficult season for Larne man Haveron and the final straw for the board was a defeat to Ards at the Oval last Friday night.

The highlight was a rare Boxing Day victory against old rivals Linfield.

The former Ballymena and Coleraine player spoke with Q Radio after the match and said he hoped it would be the springboard to further success.

But it wasn't to be and the Glens confirmed his fate with this statement on the club website -

Glentoran FC wishes to announce that Team Manager Gary Haveron has left the club.

Since his appointment, Gary has shown unrelenting enthusiasm and commitment to the role and to securing a positive future for Glentoran. His work rate never wavered and he has been an outstanding ambassador for the club. We thank him for this and wish Gary every success for the future both inside and outside football.

However, the Board of Directors reluctantly reached the conclusion that despite strong backing for Gary’s rebuilding plans in both the summer and January transfer windows, results and performances in recent months have shown little or no improvement on the same period last season. Expectations from the club and supporters were simply to see an acceptable degree of year on year progress. Unfortunately, that has not been the case.

A further statement will be issued tomorrow on the management situation for the rest of the season.

However, Haveron has defended his record saying he helped the club into the top six and a place in the quarter-finals of the Irish Cup.
