An 87-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the cowshed murder of a couple more than 30 years ago will face no further action.

Harry and Megan Tooze were shot dead on their farm near Llanharry, South Wales, on 26 July 1993.

South Wales Police launched a forensic review of the case in 2023 in the hope of uncovering new evidence about the unsolved murders.

The man, arrested in December last year, has been told that he is no longer under investigation, the force said.

Detective Superintendent Mark O'Shea, appealed for any information that could aid their investigation.

"We remain committed to solving these dreadful murders which happened more than three decades ago," said DS O'Shea.

On the morning of 26 July 1993, Mr Tooze, 64 and Mrs Tooze, 67, had left the farm to collect their pensions in Llanharry.

A neighbour later told police they had heard two gunshots at about 1.30pm, but this was not considered unusual being on a farm.

Police were called when a regular phone call from their daughter went unanswered. Officers went to the farm, and discovered the Toozes' bodies in a cowshed.

Jonathan Jones, the boyfriend of their daughter Cheryl, was jailed for life in 1995 for the murders, but was later released on appeal.

At the time, Mr Jones, a self-employed recruitment consultant at the time, was arrested after police could not find anybody who had seen him that day.

He told police that on the day the couple were killed he had taken the day off work to go to Orpington, Kent, to look for office space to rent.

Three appeal court judges took five minutes to reach their decision to overturn his conviction.

South Wales are continuing their forensic review of the case.

DS O'Shea added: "It is never too late to come forward. Even with this passage of time I appeal to anyone who has any information about the murders to come forward and speak to us because information they have may help us get justice for the family."

The force said the next of kin of the couple are being "supported and regularly updated".
