46-year-old arrested in connection with Lyra McKee murder

A man has been arrested in Derry/Londonderry by detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

The 29-year-old was from Belfast was shot while covering riots in the Creggan area of city on the 18th April. 

The new IRA claimed responsibility for the killing but said it was accidental and the shots were aimed at police.

As part of the investigation, searches were carried out at houses in the Northland Road and Creggan area of Derry/Londonderry earlier today. 

The 46-year-old suspect was detained under the Terrorism Act and is being held for questioning at Musgrave Serious Crime suite. 

A number of items were seized and taken for further examination. 

Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said: “Since Lyra was murdered following violent disorder in Creggan in Derry/Londonderry on 18th April, our investigation has received widespread support from the community.

“I still want to hear from anyone who has any information and would appeal to the public to contact my team of detectives on 101.
