The Department for Communities has announced Neighbourhood Renewal Investment funding of £781,836 towards a new Community Centre for the Rosemount area of Derry/Londonderry.

The money will cover the costs of demolishing the old Rosemount Resource Centre and building a new modern facility.

The new building will ensure multi-functional use of the space, to continue the delivery of current community services.

Sharon McCullagh from the Department for Communities said: “The Neighbourhood Renewal funding will provide much needed community infrastructure in the Outer West Neighbourhood Renewal Area to cater for the needs of the local residents.

"The current facility is no longer fit for purpose and a new centre will provide a welcoming social and community base for all generations of the area.

"The new building will ensure multi-functional use of the community space to facilitate the continued delivery of current community services and also provide the opportunity for additional service provision identified by the local residents through the consultation process such as Men’s Health Shed, Fishing Club, Reading Club and other ‘Healthy Mind’ programmes.”

Welcoming the funding Mrs Eileen Kivlehan the Chairperson of Rosemount Resource Centre said: “We the committee, staff and beneficiaries are overjoyed with this announcement.

"Our new facility will not only enable us to build on our existing community infrastructure but it will also give us the opportunity to develop new projects We are looking forward to the future as we will be able to provide a better quality of services to all.

“We would like to thank the DFC for their continuous support and faith in our organisation.”

The news has also been welcomed by local Sinn Féin Councillor, Hayleigh Fleming:
