A Neonatal Nurse with the Western Trust has been recognised for her work and support to babies and parents in her care.

Maureen Gill was awarded Northern Ireland Neonatal Nurse of the Year.

The North West woman has worked at Altnagelvin Hospital for over 25 years.

Her role has evolved from enrolled nurse, to staff nurse, and she also completed the Enhanced Neonatal Nurse course at Queen's University.

Speaking after receiving her award, Maureen said: “This award came as an unexpected surprise to me and I am truly honoured by this achievement and to be recognised for doing what I love to do.

"This has only come about with the help and support of my nursing colleagues and I would like to thank Jayne Magee who nominated me.

“Although the neonatal unit can be a very challenging environment to work in, it has been a privilege to care and help nurture the precious lives of these tiny babies.”

Maureen was nominated by her colleague Sister Jayne Magee.

Speaking about Maureen, Jayne explained: “Maureen is extremely hard working, caring and compassionate and very supportive of all staff who work alongside her each day, teaching and nurturing us all with her skill and expertise and of course her special sense of humour.

"This is something that the parents also love about Maureen.  She supports and encourages them to care for their babies, and builds their confidence with praise and encouragement.”

Kieran Downey, Director of Women and Children’s Services said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to Maureen on this incredible achievement.

"We have a very committed paediatric and neonatal service across the Western Trust and I am delighted that Maureen has received this much deserved recognition for her dedication to ensuring the best outcomes for the babies and their families in our care.”
