Another 20 people die in NI after contracting Covid19

Another 20 people have died in Northern Ireland after contracting Covid19. 

It brings the death toll recorded by the Department of Health to 1,434. 

Meanwhile a further 1,500 people have also tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours. 

In comparison, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (Nisra) reported 1,895 Covid19 related deaths here, up until New Years Day. 

It comes as Northern Ireland prepares to introduce a version of the Covid-19 pre-departure testing regime for travelers.

Health Minister Robin Swann said: “I have agreed in principle to the proposed pre-departure testing regime for Northern Ireland.

“Officials are currently working with colleagues across the UK to resolve policy and operational issues around an effective implementation.

“This will strengthen our response to the changes seen in the transmission of the virus both domestically and across the globe.”

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps set out new rules which, from next week, will require passengers arriving in England by boat, train or plane – including UK nationals – to take a test up to 72 hours before leaving the country of departure.

Failure to comply will lead to an immediate £500 fine.
