Belfast Mosque opens its doors to help people understand the faith

Belfast Mosque will throw open its doors to the public later to help people understand the faith.

It's part of "Visit my Mosque Day" across the UK which hopes to promote unity among faith communities.

250 are opening their doors as a survey suggests 90-percent of the British population have never been to one.

Belfast Mosque is on the city's Wellington Street.

Spokeswoman Naomi Green says there's a need to explain that Islam is completely separate from the atrocities committed by Islamist terrorists.

She told Q Radio,

"Many people think Islam is associated with terrorism or that Muslims condone terrorism. Which we don't. Or issues regarding the treatment of women".

"That's why we're asking people to come down and hopefully have some of those stereotypes challenged".

The event will take place today between 12 and 5pm.
