Floral tributes have been laid after an eight-year-old girl died following a road crash in Carrickfergus.

Scarlett Rossborough, who is from the Larne area, was among a group of children who were visiting the Co Antrim town.

Another child was taken to hospital following the incident at about 11.40am on Wednesday.

Police said on Wednesday they attended with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance, but Scarlett died at the scene.

Since the road reopened, floral tributes, a teddy bear and messages of support for Scarlett’s family have been left at the site of the tragedy.

A card signed by PSNI Larne and Carrickfergus read: “Thinking of you and wishing only peace and comfort. We are truly sorry for your loss.”

Another message, which was not signed, read: “New bright shining star is in the sky. Fly high little angel. God bless.”

The Police Service of Northern Ireland have appealed for any witnesses to the incident or anyone with information to contact officers.

District Commander for Mid and East Antrim, Superintendent Gillian Kearney, said she and her colleagues are “profoundly saddened by what occurred in Carrickfergus yesterday morning”.

“It is too soon to fully comprehend exactly what happened, and we understand the significant impact and unimaginable pain this dreadful event will have on the family, the other children involved, the staff and their families,” she said.

“We have appointed two dedicated family liaison officers to offer specialist support to the bereaved family during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts are very much with them as they come to terms with the loss of their daughter under such tragic circumstances.”

She added: “We are continuing to appeal to anyone who was in the High Street area of the town around 11.40am and who may have dashcam footage or any information which could assist us with our inquiries, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 684 09/08/23.”
