Police are appealing for information after a laser was shone at an aircraft landing at the City of Derry Airport on Thursday 1 March.

The incident was reported at 9.45pm, as the plane was inbound from Stansted.

Sergeant Nick Rainey said:

"This could have had terrible consequences, and I would ask anyone with information that would assist in our investigation to contact us.

"We believe the laser was shone from somewhere between the Magheramason and Newbuildings area.

"If you can help identify whoever is responsible, or have any relevant information, please contact the non- emergency number 101 quoting reference 1452  of 01/03/18.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”

In a facebook the PSNI also wanted to remind people that there can be consequences for the person shining the laser at the aircraft as well.

A spokesperson said:

"Firstly Lasering an aircraft is incredibly dangerous.

"By Lasering an aircraft you may dazzle or distract the pilot, it can cause temporary blindness, glaring, flash blindness and after images which can endanger both the crew and members of the public on the aircraft but also to those on the ground.

"As incidents are reported to air traffic control it can actually result in disruption to other flights.

"There are also specific offences in relation to Lasering an aircraft - Endangering the safety of an aircraft with a fine of up to £5000 and/or imprisonment of up to 5 years.

"Please think twice about purchasing lasers for yourself or family members, what seems like an innocent toy can have deadly consequences."
