A 55-year-old man has been charged with assaulting police and being in possession of an offensive weapon.
It follows an incident at a house in the Mountain Springs area of Newcastle yesterday during which two officers sustained head and facial injuries.
The suspect is due to appear before Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on July 15th.
A 35-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including harassment has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
A PSNI spokesperson said: ''A 55-year-old man has been charged with a number of offences including assault on police, resisting police, possessing offensive weapon in public place and assault.
''He is due to appear before Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court on July 15th.
''As is usual procedure all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.''
