More than 60 firefighters work to extinguish blaze in Londonderry

More than 60 firefighters have been working to put out a fire in Co Londonderry.

The blaze at a residential and commercial property in Lower Clarendon Street, Northland, Derry, broke out just before 12:00pm on Sunday.

Ten Fire Appliances attended the blaze including two from Crescent Link Fire Station and three from Northland Fire Station.

Appliances from Newtownstewart, Maghera, Magherafelt and Dungiven fire stations, along with a command support unit from Strabane, were also present.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said the fire had been dealt with as of 4:00pm on Monday.

“Firefighters wearing Breathing Apparatus, used water jets to extinguished the fire,” they said.

“Firefighters rescued two people from the 5th floor of the building and 1 person was left in the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

“Our Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the incident to ensure that the fire was brought under control.

“We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we dealt with the incident.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with at 4.12pm.”
