Omagh residents urged to check accounts

It's believed cash machines in and around the town have been targeted by criminals. It comes just over a month after two men were arrested over incidents related to 'card skimming' in the town and elsewhere. Locals have taken to social media to forewarn and alert others of potential dangers after some have already been defrauded.

People across Omagh are being urged to check their bank accounts.

That's after a slew of local residents raised suspicions over a number of ATMs in and around the town in the past week. 

One local woman posted on social media that she'd been "scammed" after using a well-known hole-in-the-wall at the Showgrounds Retail Park. 

Her warnings come after other local folk made similar reports relating to cash machines on the Gortin Road and the Kevlin Road. 

Police arrested two men in the town at the end of May after the discovery of a 'card skimming' devices. The two were detained in relation to a number of fraud offences committed across the province, including counties Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh, Derry and Down.

Speaking at the time, Detective Inspector Colin Patterson said: "The devices largely consisted of a card reader and miniature camera. These instruments are tiny and can be easily missed by unsuspecting members of the public. I would encourage anyone using ATMs to take a good look at the machine prior to entering your card just to satisfy yourself that there are no issues. Anyone who suspects they may have had their details 'skimmed' can contact police on 101."
