Multi-million pound plans to create a North West Transport Hub have taken a significant step forward.

The old Waterside Railway Station has now been purchased by Translink.

A public consultation identified the historic building as the preferred option for the new Hub.

Proposals include restoration and refurbishment of the former listed Waterside Railway Station, new platforms, an enhanced Park & Ride, an Active and Sustainable Travel Centre, demolition of the current train station, a new bus turning circle, Greenway link to the City Centre via the Peace Bridge as well as Track, Signalling and Telecoms works.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said:

“This is an important milestone for this ambitious project which will consist of new train terminus accommodation, an enhanced park and ride scheme with approximately 100 spaces and additional facilities to promote sustainable and active travel options in the region.

"It can be seen as part of wider plans to improve public transport in the City. The project is currently being progressed to detailed design and planning application."

Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said:

“This is an exciting development in our plans to deliver the new Multi Modal Transport Hub for the North West.  We launched public consultation on the design proposals last year and have already received a very positive response to this from a range of stakeholders.  The closing date is next Friday (20 January) so there is still time for people to give us their feedback on these proposals here.

“We are committed to making public transport Your First Choice for Travel in Northern Ireland. This major project along with our recent progress on the Derry~Londonderry Railway Line upgrade and continued investment in new bus and coach fleet demonstrate our ongoing commitment to transforming local public transport infrastructure to attract more people to use better active travel modes.”
