Travelling crime gangs target Mid Ulster businesses

Police say travelling crime gangs have been operating in Mid Ulster and targeting local businesses. 

In a facebook post, the PSNI says the groups have been travelling "long distances to come in and target shops, houses and vehicles then leave." 

Some are believed to be cross border gangs, while others are from across Northern Ireland. 

In recent months, PSNI officers in Magherafelt have caught a number of groups, with some already going through the courts or due for sentencing. 

Cookstown crews also recently caught a cross border shop lifting team, which had been wanted for a range of offences dating back to 2011.

In the same facebook post, a PSNI spokesperson said they're actively targeting these gangs with anti burglary patrols and checkpoints and patrolling car parks and the town. 

In the run up to Christmas, people are being urged to be extra vigilant and to protect themselves from these criminals.

The public's reminded:

• not to leave high value items in cars
   
• to be alert to shoplifters and thieves - especially those working in groups and using distraction techniques
   
• not to leave homes unlocked
   
• report any suspicious vehicles/persons to the PSNI - keep in mind registration plates of vehicles
