Two men in their 50s are being treated in hospital for serious head injuries, following an attack outside a bar in Holywood.
It happened on Hibernia Street at around 11 last night.
Police say the injured men were attacked by a single assailant.
A 54 year old man was arrested shortly after at a nearby filling station.
The suspect remains in police custody and is being questioned by detectives.
Detective Sergeant Lauren Edwards said, "We know there was a large crowd in the area at the time and I would like to appeal to those people who were there and who may have witnessed what happened to please get in touch.
