Welcomed speed reduction outside Groarty P.S.

Roads Minister Chris Hazzard has confirmed that plans are now in place to reduce the speed limit on the Coshquin Road, Derry, from 60mph to 30mph.

It comes following a campaign dating back to the 1980s involving staff of Groarty P.S. and members of the local community.

The new speed limit is expected to come into force by the end of September or earlier once all the necessary signage and roadmarkings are in place.

The restriction will apply from the Coshquin Road junction with the Aileach Road to its junction with the Whitehouse Road.

Commenting on the new measures, Minister Chris Hazzard said: "These measures will be put in place as soon as possible and I am confident this will address the concerns of local parents and the school which I know have been voiced for some time. This is a particular issue I have been determined to resolve since I became Minister.

“The safety of our children, especially as they travel to and from school each day is paramount. With the beginning of the new school term and with shorter daylight hours, all drivers are reminded to watch out for children walking or cycling, and to take extra care around school buses especially when children are getting on or off.”
