Work to begin on New £1.45Million sports Pavilion at Leafair, Derry-Londonderry

Leafair Community Association has announced that the construction of a new Sport and Recreational Pavilion will begin in the next 2 weeks at the 3G pitches in Leafair. 

They managed to secure £1.45 million for the building, which will be across three floors. 

The first floor will be changing facilities for clubs using the pitches, the second floor will consist of community and recreational space and the third will contain sports rooms and office facilities. 

A spokesperson for the Leafair Community Association said they're "delighted" at the news: 

"We are delighted to announce that the construction of the new Sport & Recreational building will now begin in the next 2 weeks.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who worked so hard over the many years to achieve this must needed facility namely; GSAP, Outer North, Derry City & Strabane District Council and the Social Investment Fund.

"We are hopeful that this project will be completed approx. within a 12 month period it will be a great asset to the Greater Shantallow Community and beyond." 

Meanwhile, this development has been welcomed by Councillor Sandra Duffy: 

“I welcome the news that work will be beginning on the new Sports Pavilion at the 3G Pitches  in early March.

This is good news for the local area.This new Pavilion will be a state of the art sports and recreation facility for use in the community." 

She added: 

"This is an exciting opportunity to achieve such a building within the Greater Galliagh area and I congratulate Leafair Community Association for their work on this project.

"It is envisaged that the work will take up to 12 months to complete and should not cause undue disruption to the local community."
