Just 6 points separate the top 5 teams after the weekend's results

Ards are set to lodge an appeal against Saturday's 3-1 defeat by Portadown in the Danske Bank Premiership.

It's emerged one of the Ports' goalscorers, Robert Garrett, was on an Irish FA suspension list and according to the rules shouldn't have taken part in the game.

If the appeal is successful the result would be overturned with Ards handed a 3-0 win.

Portadown fell foul of the football authorities before the season started when they were docked 12 points for undisclosed player payments.

Ironically, Saturday's victory wiped out the deficit, moving them to zero points, just five behind second from bottom Carrick Rangers.

Meanwhile, just 6 points separate the top 5 teams after the weekend fixtures.

Leaders Crusaders had a scoreless draw with nearest rivals Linfield at Windsor Park.

Crues manager Stephen Baxter expects the Blues to stay in the title mix, along with a few others.

Also on Saturday, Cliftonville moved into third place with a 3-0 victory against Glenavon at Solitude.

And Glentoran had their third league win in a row, 2-1 away to Carrick Rangers.
