Derry City 3, Shamrock Rovers 1.

Derry City have beat Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

That's after an enthralling 3-1 win at Maginn Park in Buncrana on Friday night

City's Aaron McEneff opened the scoring after just 4 minutes with a worldie from about 25 yards, before Rovers' Graham Burke responded with a wonder-strike of his own on the half-hour mark.

Derry led at half-time courtesy of a well-taken goal from midfielder Barry McNamee, the Ramelton man chipping in with his fifth goal of the league campaign.

At times ill-tempered, and with Shamrock Rovers trying hard for an equaliser - Derry sat deep attempting to nick one on the counter-attack.

The Dubliners did see an effort scrubbed off after a foul on City's captain and 'keepe Ger Doherty, but Ronan Curtis virtually sealed the points for the Candystripes late on.

That's after he made a run from deep on the left-hand side, before being bundled over in the box by Sham's Seán Heaney.

Aaron McEneff added his second of the game and his side's third nervelessly from the spot.

His brace capping an emotional night for the talisman - who marked his recently passed uncle's birthday with a memorable goal and three important points for his side.

The result leaves the Candystipes 4 points clear of fifth, and 2 points shy of third before they face second-placed Dundalk at Oriel Park on Tuesday night.
