There's been lots of hype and speculation about the picturesque, undulating, and seemingly daunting new holes on the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club.

The course plays host to The Open Championship 2019, in the 148th year of golf's oldest major.

Renowned for its intricacies, it's an iconic Harry Colt design.

Now, thanks to the work of golf architect Martin Ebert, of Mackenzie & Ebert, there are two brand new holes- the 7th and 8th.

The former is a long par-5, whilst the latter is a par-4, running parallel with Portrush's East Strand beach.

They've been introduced as preparations intensify for the hosting of the Open.

This evening, ceremonial shots will be hit by the Captain David McMullan, President Hugh Clarke, Ladies Captain Carole Rainey, and Ladies President Moyra McElderry, to mark the opening of the 7th and 8th.

It comes ahead of Captain's Day on Saturday, when the new additions will be played on competitively.

The Captain said, "These holes have the potential to become famous throughout the world of golf. They are a masterpiece and there is no doubt they will provide some of the iconic holes when The Open is played here."

After a number of changes, the championship course has been lengthened by 130 yards to 7317 yards, with the 17th and 18th to be converted into an area for the tented village and infrastructure during the tournament.

Chairman of the club's championship committee, John Bamber, said, "There is no doubt the links have been strengthened by Martin Ebert's wonderful additions and I am also sure that Harry Colt would see these changes as continued progress in what is often described as the jewel in his crown."
