Cow rescued after getting trapped at Marble Arch Caves

Fire and Rescue teams alerted after reports of "animal in distress" at well-loved beauty spot in Fermanagh on Sunday. Cow needed rescue after getting trapped in sink hole in Belcoo.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service first got word of the animal needing help at around half past six on Sunday evening.

“Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) received a call at 6:24pm to a report of an animal in distress at the Marble Arch Caves area in Belcoo, Enniskillen," a spokesman said.

“One Fire Appliance each from Enniskillen and Omagh Fire Stations, as well as 2 Specialist Rescue Team Appliances were deployed to the scene of a Heifer cow fallen down a sink hole in a heavily wooded area," he continued.

Firefighters from local stations were also assisted by a team from Irish Cave Rescue. Slings and lines as well as a tractor were needed in order to free the stricken cow.

“Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service finished at the scene at 8:19pm,” the statement concludes.
