The Irish Government has included the A5 Western Transport Corridor scheme in their 'Ireland 2040' plan.
West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan has welcomed the news and praised Leo Varadkar for pledging his support.
He has called it the "most significant infrastructure scheme on this island".
"The Southern Government's commitment to the A5 project is absolutely critical for the progression of the scheme and today I welcome the inclusion of the A5 scheme in what is a strategic infrastructure plan for the future of this island."
This piece of infrastructure could "unlock the economic potential of the area, bring jobs and importantly, save lives" according the SDLP Infrastructure spokesperson.
The first stages of the A5 WTC scheme are due to begin, no later by the end of this year, and when complete will provide 85km of dual carriageway from New Buildings to Aughnacloy.
However while the news is welcomed, the MLA says it can't advance without a Stormont Executive in Stormont:
