Landslide victory for Molloy as Sinn Fein retains seat

In Mid-Ulster it was no surprise as Francie Molloy retained his seat.

The absence of a unionist vote would have been futile anyway as the Sinn Fein vote was so strong.

The turnout was 68.59 per cent.

Mr Molloy polled 25,455 - almost 6,000 more than in the previous General Election.

His nearest rival was the DUP's Keith Buchanan who doubled the party's vote to 12,565.

The Ulster Unionist Party had a weak showing as Mark Glasgow only managed 3,017.

Malachy Quinn of the SDLP polled 4,563 while Alliance's Fay Watson achieved 1,094.

There seemed to be a serious case of unionist apathy in the area. Coupled with unfavourable weather conditions, many may have chosen to stay at home.
