LISTEN: Charity targeted in arson in clean up plea following arrest of two teens

Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an attack on a charity which helps disabled people in Derry/Londonderry. 

The North West Learning Disability Centre on Foyle Road was set on fire after the glass door was smashed in at around 7 this morning. 

The 13 and 15-year-olds are suspected of two counts of arson and burglary which relates to a theft at a fast food restaurant on Bishop Street a short time earlier. 

The pair remain in custody.   

The CEO of Destined - a charity which empowers vulnerable people through social inclusion - says 250 weekly users of the centre will be adversely affected. 

Dermot O'Hara also said there could be job losses as a result of the incident which could have totally destroyed their new building. 

He's appealed for local residents to help him clean up tomorrow morning at 9am. 

Police have confirmed two males aged 15 and 13 years old have been arrested, following a report of arson at premises in the Foyle Road area of Derry/Londonderry this morning (Saturday 29th February).

Sergeant Michael Hughes said: “ Both males were arrested on suspicion of arson and two counts of burglary. The males were also arrested in relation to a burglary which occurred at a fast food outlet on the Bishop Street area of Derry/Londonderry sometime between 5:10am and 5:25am this morning.

“Entry was gained to the premises and it is believed that a sum of money was taken from a till inside the outlet. Damage was caused to the door of the property following the incident.

“Both are in police custody at this time.

“Our enquiries are continuing in relation to both of these incident and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious at either the Bishop Street or Foyle Road areas of the city, to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 350 29/02/20.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
