Man charged after houses targeted with sectarian graffiti in Ballymena 'hate crime'

A man has been charged with a number of offences including criminal damage after sectarian graffiti appeared on houses in Ballymena.

The 25-year-old was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of 25 counts of criminal damage to properties and vehicles near Albert Place.

White paint was daubed onto houses on Sydney Lane, High Street, Albert Place, the local Court House and premises on Lower Mill Street.

Two cars were also singled out.

Police said most of the graffiti was "of a sectarian nature" and is therefore being treated as sectarian hate crimes.

The suspect is due to appear before Ballymena Magistrates Court on Saturday, April 11.

A PSNI statement said: "Police investigating criminal damage in Ballymena on Wednesday (8th April) have charged a man to appear at Ballymena Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 11th April.

"The 25-year-old is charged with offences, including criminal damage.

"As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service."
