Crew Commander from Omagh Fire Station Terry Canning was awarded the Spirit of Sport Award at the Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland awards.
Terry was competing in the Boston Marathon when he stopped to help New Jersey runner Julianne Bowe.
She was struggling to overcome the heat and to finish the race.
As a Firefighter his natural instinct is to help people in need, which he did - he picked her up and carried her to the finishing line before setting down so that she could cross it herself.
His selfless actions were caught on film and broadcast around the world.
