Dublin based Sinn Fein senator - Maire Devine - has been suspended by the party for three months for an offensive retweet.
The tweet referred to Brian Stack - a prison officer who was murdered by the IRA in 1983 - as a "sadist".
The party's National Chairman Declan Kearney said the behaviour was "unacceptable":
In a statement he said, “Sinn Féin strongly disapproves of what has happened. There can be no excuse for the hurt and offence which has been caused to the Stack family.
