MLAs have passed a motion at Stormont calling for new statutory guidance on restraint and seclusion in schools.

Chair of the education committee Chris Lyttle says current rules are over 20 years old.

The Education minister, Peter weir is facing calls to urgently develop new guidance on the restraint and seclusion of children in schools - including those with additional needs.

Mr. Lyttle, told MLAs it’s been over two years since the British Association of Social Workers expressed concerns.

A motion demanding action was passed in the Assembly after he warned the current situation is unacceptable and puts Northern Ireland at odds with other parts of the UK.

Mr. Weir insists progress is being made after a review was launched, but accepts more work needs to be done.
