Irish triathlete Aileen Reid has announced she is to retire from the sport.

The Derry/Londonderry woman said on her official twitter she was 'waving the white flag'. The 35 year old blamed illness and injury for her decision.

"Illness and injury are inevitable in a sporting career and I am a fighter" said Reid "but this fight got me."

Reid appeared for Team Ireland at two Olympic games during her career.

Reid added that she hopes to move into coaching now her career has come to an end.
