Three more people have been arrested over the shooting of a police officer in Nottingham city centre.

Detectives have also been given more time to question a woman already in custody over the incident.

The officer was shot in the foot after he approached two suspects at a bus stop in Angel Row at 4.50am on Sunday. He continues to be treated in hospital.

Three people were arrested in a vehicle later that evening, including a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent.

Nottinghamshire Police said on Wednesday that magistrates had approved a new period of detention in relation to the female suspect.

The other two people who were in the vehicle - a 24-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman - have been released on bail.

Among the three new arrests was a 21-year-old woman who was detained in southeast London on Tuesday on suspicion of assisting an offender. She has since been released on bail.

A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested in separate areas of Nottingham on Wednesday on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender. Both remain in custody.

Meanwhile, a 30-year-old man arrested in Bedfordshire in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of assisting an offender has been recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his licence.

"It remains crucial that anyone with information about this incident comes forward and speaks to us," said Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Bull.

"The injured officer was carrying out his duty to protect the public and it is truly abhorrent that this has happened to him," he added.

"We continue to support him as he undergoes further treatment in hospital and are keeping him and his family fully informed of developments in the investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, or pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
