Why rare Ferrari in the UK for less than a day was targeted by police

A limited-edition Ferrari worth £3.7m has been seized by the Metropolitan Police after only being in the UK for one day.

The Ferrari Monza SP2 - one of only 499 made by the Italian car manufacturer - was targeted as part of a crackdown on anti-social driving in central London.

Officers found the supercar was uninsured and the driver, who had been in the car for less than half an hour when he was stopped, only had a provisional driving licence.

One of the limited-edition vehicles sold at auction for almost $5m (£3.7m) earlier this year.

The Met seized a total of 90 vehicles worth more than £8m during the operation targeting uninsured drivers as well as anti-social and dangerous driving across Hyde Park, Kensington and Chelsea between 7 and 9 August.

This is the highest number and value of vehicles seized in the operation's five-year history.

Fifteen of the cars were seized under new powers allowing police to seize them rather than hand out a warning if they are involved in anti-social behaviour.

During stops for suspected insurance offences, officers arrested a man on suspicion of handling stolen goods and money laundering after he was found with 19 bank cards in other people's names and more than £2,500 in cash.

Another man stopped for driving without insurance was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply drugs.

A third was arrested for using words and behaviour that would likely cause harassment, alarm and distress, and a fourth on suspicion of an immigration offence.

Special Chief Inspector Geoff Tatman, who led the operation, said: "We regularly hear from local people who are fed up with people driving cars dangerously in the area, or with modifications which make them a nuisance to those who live nearby.

"Through operations like this we're arresting these drivers and seizing their cars so we can keep our roads safe and send a clear message that we won't put up with their reckless and dangerous behaviour."
