Lake District Views at Armathwaite Hall & Spa

The Lake District in Cumbria on the northwest coast of England about an hour from the Scottish border is one of the most beautiful places in the UK. To fully appreciate the National Park, you would need at least a couple of days to attempt to summit one of its many peaks and spend time on the lakes. Ullswater is by far one of the best lakes to be located around in the Lake District. Unlike, Windermere (the largest), with its motorised sports and the constant stream of activity, Ullswater is calmer, quieter and lets you actually appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Pooley Bridge Village, located at the northern end here is famous for the little stone bridge that gives the town its name.

The Lake District is not just lakes and mountains - the so-called English Alps - but includes 12 miles of seashore. Escape the congestion of Ambleside and Langdale and head to Mediobogdum, a well-preserved Roman fort just below Hardknott Pass. Built at the same time as the Emperor Hadrian began his great coast-to-coast wall to the north, it commanded a vast panorama from the mountains to the sea. The Lake District also has many artistic and literary connections, most famously William Wordsworth, who was born in Cockermouth in 1770 and drew much of his poetic inspiration from the surrounding landscape. Other poets, writers and painters followed, including John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome and Alfred Wainwright, author of the classic Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fell.

Armathwaite-Hall Country House and Spa

Armathwaite Hall Country House and Spa - a member of the Pride of Britain Hotels collection is set on 400 acres of woodland with a dramatic vista of Skiddaw Mountain on the banks of Lake Bassenthwaite near Keswick. Steeped in history and surrounded by magnificent views, this elegant country house epitomises true English style.

The privately owned, four-star 17th century former stately home, has 46 individually designed bedrooms, wood panelled public rooms, magnificent fireplaces, two restaurants, conference rooms, snooker room and tennis. There are also a number of dog-friendly ground floor rooms with easy access to the gardens. On our second evening, we enjoyed a five-course meal in the Lake View Restaurant. The menu is in keeping with the hall’s country demeanour, and much of the food is sourced from local producers.
