The former Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe Dr. James Mahaffey has died.
He was 88 and was one of the north west’s best known clerics during some of the most turbulent years of The Troubles.
Dr. Mehaffey was Bishop for more than 20 years until his retirement in 2002.
He died peacefully last night in Derry/Londonderry surrounded by his family.
It is thought his funeral will take place at St Columb's Cathedral later this week
RIP Bishop James Mehaffey. Thanks for his warmth & kindness and the powerful and courageous witness of his cooperation and rapport with Bishop Daly during troubled times. The bridges they built together have made a real difference. Prayers & sympathy for Thelma & his loved ones pic.twitter.com/mjrupdhten
