Dozens of homes were been evacuated in Derry – Londonderry due to a security alert.

Police say a suspicious object discovered in the Farmhill area of Foyle Springs on Friday morning, was a hoax.

It’s understood that army bomb experts arrived at the scene shortly before midday and carried out a controlled explosion on the object.

The Area was cordoned off, but has since been re-opened.

Independent Councillor Darren O'Reilly said many residents were forced to stay with nearby family:

Police say, that ATO examined the device and declared it a hoax.  Families have been allowed to return to their homes.
