A 31-year-old American tourist has died following a two vehicle crash in Armoy.

It happened on the Gracehill Road around 7pm on Tuesday night, not far from the site of the 'Dark Hedges'.

Police have named the victim as Michael Munro from Orange, Connecticut.

Reports suggest he was in Northern Ireland on Honeymoon, and had stopped at the famous tourist attraction.

Thousands of people flock to the area every year to see the line of trees, now strongly associated with hit HBO series 'Game of Thrones'.

Councillor, Cara McShane says it's not the first time there's been a bad crash in the popular North Antrim tourist destination.

"There is a deep sense of shock in the local community here in Armoy and wider across North Antrim" She said.

"There is a palpable anger too that more is not being done to ensure the safety of road users at this visitor attraction.

"While this is a very rural location with specific sensitivities, the roads infrastructure can not cope with the demand of heavy vehicular traffic and tourists in the narrow country roads.

"It is our understanding that a number of tourists have been involved in this accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those involved."

Two other people were also taken to the Causeway Hospital for treatment.

Police say the Gracehill Road will remain closed for some time.
