The Munich teenager had travelled by ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland.
The 18-year-old's body was discovered two weeks later - on April 20 1988 - in a remote part of Ballypatrick Forest on the outskirts of Ballycastle, Co Antrim.
No one has ever been convicted of her killing.
Today's ceremony was led by MLA John Dallat...
For the last two years Dublin singer and blogger Keeley Moss has been running a website dedicated to Inga Maria's memory.
Also taking part in today's ceremony was poet Clare McCotter who read aloud a piece dedicated to the backpacker.
For Inga's family the memorial stone will be a permanent reminder of a loving daughter and sister.
For the local community it will also be a permanent reminder of a brutal, senseless murder for which no one,so far, has been convicted.
