The PSNI in Mid Ulster is highlighting how cyclists are more vulnerable on roads in comparison to other drivers.

They've posted on social media to make residents more cautious and aware:

"We are highlighting perspectives from drivers and cyclists as we all share the road and should respect each other's journey.

"Drivers - Look out for cyclists on roads. You will not hear them and must rely on seeing them.

"Cyclists may make unexpected manoeuvres, anticipate this.

"Allow the same space as a car width before passing Cyclists and overtake only when it is safe to do so.

"Cyclists on the road may delay your journey slightly but put yourself in the place of the Cyclist they may be out training or going to work just like yourself.

"Our priority is everyone getting there safely! Check of mirrors will help monitor changing road conditions. Larger articulated vehicles may create a draft passing too close to cyclists and this can unbalance the rider.

Cyclists are also reminded to make themselves seen to other road users by wearing "bright/hi vis clothing, safety helmet, and a rear working light for visability".

The spokesperson is also asking them to "give plenty of warning of actions and signal well.

"Stop at red lights and obey the rules of the road just like drivers. Take care near junctions as you may have difficulty seeing other road users who may not notice you.

"It is dangerous to pass on the inside of a vehicle signalling to turn left or slowing down.

"The Highway Code states that cyclists should never ride more than 2-abreast and be in single file on narrow/busy roads.

"Be considerate of pedestrians and make use of your horn/bell. Be careful of obstructions on our roads, potholes and parked vehicles, do not swerve.

"We spoke to a local Cycle Club who aim to keep Group Sizes to a manageable amount, groups vary on ability, speed, riders being bike aware.

"Members are insured with Cycling Ireland and this would cover third party in event of an Incident!"
