A man has been arrested over the death of a teenage girl who was found seriously injured near a bus stop in a suspected hit-and-run.

The 16-year-old was found lying in the street in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, at around 8.30am last Tuesday.

The girl was taken to hospital but died there four days later on Saturday, after suffering injuries including serious wounds to her head and chest.

She is now believed to have been the victim of a suspected hit-and-run, according to police.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The suspect is being held in custody while he is questioned by detectives, West Yorkshire Police said.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Elly Buchanan, of the force's homicide and major enquiry team, said: "Our thoughts remain with the girl's family.

"Through our investigation we now believe that she was the victim of a road traffic collision, where the vehicle failed to stop at the scene, however our investigation remains ongoing.

"We are continuing to appeal for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to come forward and speak with us."
