Man dies after climbing accident near Ballycastle

A man has died following a climbing accident near Ballycastle.

Multiple emergency services were scrambled to Fairhead  in a large scale search and rescue operation.

Police, HM coastguard, Air Ambulance and HM Coastguard rescue helicopter from Prestwick were involved.

Redbay Lifeboat was also tasked.

It is understood an elderly man fell from a height.

The Fair Head car park has been closed to the public for use by emergency services and police would ask motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles access to the site.

Local Councillor, Alderman Joan Baird of the UUP expressed her sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the man who sadly lost his life this morning at Fair Head, Ballycastle.
Alderman Baird said "I was very sorry to hear of the tragic accident this morning (Thursday) when a man has lost his life whilst climbing at Fair Head. I want to send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

"I know our Community here in Ballycastle will be shocked and saddened by this tragic event and I speak for everyone here sending our thoughts and prayers for his family.

"Fair Head is a beautiful place and attracts climbers and walkers from far and wide but it can prove treacherous as it has today.
