Equality Commission to face councillor grilling

Equality Commission representatives are to face a grilling from local councillors today.

It's after they rescinded approval of a review over the naming of a Newry playground after a hunger striker.
Council-owned Raymond McCreesh playground was controversially named in 2001.
Since then Newry and Mourne council's held numerous debates over it.
In 2012 it reviewed the name and decided it would remain.
The Commission accepted it at the time but made a U-turn on approval of this review earlier this year.
It's after they were legally pursued by a woman whose son was murdered by the IRA in 1976.
It now claims the council didn't follow recommendations and wasn't transparent.
At a meeting in Downpatrick tonight councillors will quiz the commission on its decision to withdraw approval.
