A hapless motorist failed their theory test 157 times.

Stats disclosed reveal that an unnamed male driver from England finally succeeded in passing their theory test at the 158th time of asking after spending more than £3,000 in a bid to pass. Another woman has tried 117 times and is still yet to pass.

The findings, released by Select Car Leasing, also found that a man in England needed 72 attempts to pass his practical driving test.

Mark Tongue, director of Select Car Leasing, said:" It's true what they say: If at first you don't succeed try, try and try again."

"Passing your driving test can be one of life's trickiest challenges and it can take some of us many more attempts than others.

"But whether you fail your test once or 157 times, there's no shame in picking yourself up and having another go – and anyone who can do that deserves great credit."
