Police can now inspect without the need for 'reasonable suspicion' of an offence

Hundreds of drivers have been caught using new police powers to conduct random breath tests in Northern Ireland.

Since the legislation changed in November, officers can now carry out the inspections without reasonable suspicion of an offence.

Previously, a car would only be pulled over if it appeared the driver was under the influence.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Alan Todd says the number of drunk drivers arrested in the first week of the crackdown was up 45% on the same period in 2015.
