The Sun newspaper has expressed its shock following a motion to stop sales in the North West.
Local councillors supported a motion last week put forward by Independent Councillor Paul Gallagher - calling on all retailers to stop selling the tabloid.
A Sun spokesperson said: "We are astonished that in Derry - a city that has prided itself on its association with civil liberties and free speech - some elected politicians that think it's appropriate to push such extreme censorship on its citizens and retailers."
