Locals have been paying tribute to a family man who invested his time with younger generations.
78 year-old Geoffrey Cartwright was killed last night after being hit by car as he crossed the road with his brother.
The widower was walking along the South Promenade in Newcastle at around 11pm when it happened.
Vice chair of Newry, Mourne and Down district council Willie Clarke knew him well:
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit and dangerous driving causing death.
He has been released on bail.
