Petrol bomb thrown at police car in Derry-Londonderry

A petrol bomb has been thrown at a police car in Derry/Londonderry.

It's after a group of around 40 young people gathered in the Tullymore Road area of the city just after 7pm last night.

A number of items were recovered from the scene, including wooden planks and iron bars.

Masonry was also thrown, but thankfully no injuries were reported.

The PSNI is now examining CCTV footage to identify those involved.

Inspector Moore said: “Shortly after 7:20pm, it was reported that a number of people had gathered at the Tullymore Road area in the city. Officers attended and helped to disperse those present, numbering around 40 individuals and also seized a number of items at the scene including wooden planks and iron bars.

“As police were in the area, it was reported that a petrol bomb was thrown towards a parked police vehicle but did not strike it. Masonry was thrown at a police vehicle at it during the incident. Thankfully there were no reports of any injuries.

“Our officers attended and their actions helped to prevent further disorder and by seizing these items, it helped to quell any potential unrest which may have impacted the local community.

“We will continue to work alongside local representatives and partner agencies, but it is disappointing that some people continue to disregard our repeated warnings.

“Those people who choose to engage in criminal and anti-social behaviour must understand it is unacceptable and must stop. People have a right to live in peace and to feel safe in their communities.

“Parents and guardians have an important obligation to speak to keep young people safe by knowing where they are going and who they are with. Young people must understand the dangers of getting involved in behaviour which could result in injuring themselves, others, or ultimately, a criminal record.

“Police officers are now reviewing the latest CCTV recordings to identify those involved. Where appropriate, we will make arrests and put people before the courts.”
